I went to Sukinda in September of this year. Sukinda town in the state of Orissa, India contains

more than 95% of India's chromite ore deposits. Chromium, obtained from chemically

processing chromite ore is mainly used in the manufacture of stainless steel due to it's hardness and

it is resistant to corrosion. It is also an important metal used in the alloying of steel.

I had been there once during the hot months and I was curious to see how things change

during the monsoon season. During the summer months, the evidence of pollution from the

mining companies is much more stark. The homes, the streets and forests are covered in

waste from the mines.

The Monsoon season is quite deceptive. The forests are lush and all the waste has been

washed off the trees and homes. That waste though has seeped into the soil and possibly

into the groundwater. Most of the effluents that mining companies generate when processing

chromite is dumped into the rivers which are then diverted into farmland. Untreated waste

from the Talangi chromite mines runs into the Damsola River and villagers continue to

use that water for bathing. Most villagers don't have much of a choice but to use contaminated

water. Studies have shown high levels of the toxic substance hexavelant chromium
in the rivers, groundwater and in the air.

The photos here are a very rough edit which I hope to combine with my other series
on mining in the state of Orissa.

I worked on a story on coal mining about 7 years ago in Dhanbad, in the state of Jharkhand.I had made a couple of trips there and spent about 4 weeks working on this story. I had great difficulty in getting access and spent hours and hours everyday speaking to officials. Somehow with and without their permission, I managed to get into quite a few places.
I returned just a few weeks back to the same area to see how the place had changed and also to photograph some things that were missing in my earlier story. I would like to make another trip there soon. Here's a selection of photos but will add more as I edit.

My friend Peter called me up to go for a walk as it was such a beautiful day today.We went for a short walk along the river and then stopped to have tea at this little cafe.I have a hard time imagining what it's like to live on a boat considering that one can't really keep many things in there because of space issues. We have a common friend who has a houseboat. I'm hoping she'll take us on a ride one of these days.

Gardening

Anna and I have really gotten into gardening as we have a little garden where we live. We have really cleaned it up and tried to landscape it a little bit. We planted a few vegetables and they seem to be doing quite well. I just noticed today the edges of the leaves of the dwarf bean plant are turning white. I did research it quite a bit and have come to the conclusion that it might be calcium deficiency. I stopped by the garden center to get their advice and they suggested that it could be mildew but I really don't think that's the problem. I have now fed the plants loads of powdered egg shells, chicken shit and heaped some compost over the plants. I think this will help. If anyone has other ideas or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

I went to Sasha's birthday party last night at a private club/bar in Soho.It was this tiny little place that was extremely hard to find. There was no sign on the front and one has to to go down these steps to get inside this place. You have to be a member to get in otherwise you pay a £1 admission! Amazing.I met a few of Sasha's friends and they seemed very nice. I stayed there close to 1am and Phil offered to buy me another drink to get me to stay a bit longer but I really needed to get back home.

Summer is around the corner but will probably take a little longer here in London. I started to think about Coney Island and the time I lived in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. I lived in a small one bedroom apartment off of 3rd Ave. and Bond Street from 1999-2004 and in the summers I would ride my bike over to Coney Island and just hang out there for a few hours.

B/W Printing

I have been printing in the darkroom for about 15 years now. My first lessons in printing was in a workshop in a community college in New York. I was lucky to find a share darkroom with a friend's friend in Wiliamsburg. I stared meeting other photographers and each had their own style of printing.

The most I learned was from my friend Charles who also happens to be an amazing photographer. I used to make really contrasty prints but he kept telling me to go the other way so one could see all the detail. The way I understood is that to get real consistent prints from the same image over time it's best to write down the percentage of burning or dodging time of the overall exposure of the print with all the details of the type of paper and the chemicals used along with their proportions. So, if you expose the print for 1 minute and you burn in a section for 15 seconds, its just +15% and whatever grade of filtration you use. Those percentages also translate for bigger prints of the same image. It's definitely made me a better printer but I doubt if I can ever print like him.

Hamlet Street

In 1999 I visited my friend Craig in Columbus, Ohio.While I was visiting, I made note of the gentrification of the street he had chosen to live on, Hamlet Street. On this short street, of about 1/2 city block, there is an extended family of Appalachian origin, diagonally across from his house. The apartment building has 4 units, with intergenerational familial connections spread throughout the 4 apartments.

I took an interest in one of the children, a young boy named Cody. I had some photos of Cody from this initial visit, and I knew I would want to return and photograph these families over time.
I returned to Hamlet Street in mid-2007 and spent a week there.

There is a simple chart, drawn by Craig showing the connections between the families and the apartments they live in.
